A professional recognition and a financial boost

Awarding the KP Prize and Audience Award is an initiative coming from KP's Board, and with support by Aarhuus Stiftstidende's Foundation has been made possible a long nurtured desire to upskill talent care in connection with KP.
Winning one of the prizes has meant a professional recognition and financial boost. For as everyone knows, it is the artist who, in principle, bears both expense and risk when creating art works.

On Kristine Baaglands Indgang K (Entrance K)

“In this pink universe, it is easy to forget where you are, it is cozy here with an almost homely atmosphere.”

Kristine Baagland's installation Entrance K is a disturbing plunge into the artist’s personal and institutional space, exploring the boundaries between public and private within the institutional framework of the psychiatric system. Taking the pink-lined, almost surreally cosy corridors of Aarhus University Hospital in Skejby as its starting point, the work unfolds a critical dialogue between the artist’s own psychiatric experiences and the public perception of psychiatric facilities.

The work consists of 756 shredded A4 pages, Baagland’s psychiatric health records from the period 2017-2025, making it both extremely personal and yet universal in its appeal. Shredding, as an action, serves as a powerful visual and conceptual symbol of the desire for confidentiality combined with the fragmentary memories and identities that psychiatric patients often must navigate.

This document destruction also comments on the administrative and bureaucratic aspect of psychiatric institutions, where one’s personal history is reduced to archival material and notes, mere elements in a daily office job. For healthcare professionals, this is just routine; for the patient, it is a document of one’s most fragile moments.

The installation’s spatial and colour elements encapsulate the contrast that exists between the ’cosy’ pink surroundings and the intense, often painful experiences that transpire in the rooms. This duality sheds light on the paradoxes that can arise in psychiatric environments where homeliness and the hospitalisation context collide.

Entrance K challenges the visitor to reflect on how institutional environments designed to heal often evoke feelings of isolation and alienation. Through the use of the colour pink, Baagland sheds light on the glaring contrast between the outer façade and the inner realities of mental illness – a duality that is both absurd and deeply tragic.

By blending the aesthetic with the personal and political, Entrance K stands as a vital contemporary art work that seeks not only to shed light on the artist’s own experiences, but also to initiate a broader dialogue around mental health, patient rights, and the role of the public health service in the treatment of mental disorders.

Annette Nielsen's practice
For good reasons, we cannot know exactly what motivated the audience to vote as they did, but we can refer to what Annette Nielsen herself has said about her own work;

My overall art practice is based on migration, adoption and identity seen in a decolonial contemporary. I work i.a. with a reclaiming process of lost identity and culture that also opens up the question of what identity is across borders. Through my works I investigate and comment on the complexity of transnational/transracial adoption from a personal, collective, existential and aesthetic level, where the diasporic body is often included.
The works, 2 x Banana I, II, oil on canvas (2022) are a reference partly to the art collective UFOlab 2004 and Sarah Lucas' Eating a Banana 1990. The banana as an allegory for the Asian adoptee to the West (white inside and yellow outside) becomes intertwined with the criticism of the objectification and hypersexualization of the Asian woman. I also experiment with painting technique with blurring, abstraction and simplification of the motif.
The video, "Whitewash", (2022) comments on a lost identity and the perhaps eternal search for it. The title also refers to the ongoing investigation into systemic falsification of identity papers and child trafficking under the guise of the phenomenon of transnational and transracial adoption.

å andra sidan side is a paraphrase of a fictional person from Thy in north-western Jutland and is created with needle and thread on recycled textiles. The work consists of:
A linen tablecloth showing a standing human figure in a scale of 1:1. The person is sketched and filled out with inspiration from collected photographic material, printed as a screen print, and further developed with embroidery threads of different weights.
Embroidered handkerchiefs that underscore the title of the work.
å andra sidan side is an exploration with needle and thread, in which the visual and textual merge, thereby encouraging the elimination of the contradiction between front and reverse. Suspended freely in the room, allowing the viewer to experience the work from both sides simultaneously, enhances this dichotomy.

On Pia Skogberg and Mette Hegnhøj
Visual artist Pia Skogberg and author Mette Hegnhøj's collaborative artistic project unfolds in the space of tension between visual art and poetry.
They work on reconfiguring, based on materials from second-hand shops: drawing with thread, writing with scissors and using their own sketches and graphic printing methods, or books, as a model for the final work.
Skogberg and Hegnhøj are particularly fascinated by the reverse, the behind, or other side, of materials; the invisible, quiet sides of life and embroidery, which they further explore in their work å andra sidan.

Practice
My practice unfolds in a dynamic tension between drawing and sculpture. The works stem from the attempt to combine these two forms of expression and originate in the concepts of scale, measurement and volume. As individuals we move around here on Earth, consciously or unconsciously registering everything around us, on the basis of our own body and physicality. Each one of us is our own roving measuring stick and whether the measurements that surround us are theoretical or real, we nonetheless relate them to the physical space our body creates. In other words, it is the human perception of the world that I am trying to interpret in precise and conceptual works that simultaneously contain complexity and numerous possible meanings.

Kilo(Cubic)Metre (100 x 100 x 100 cm - 1000 meters parashute line, steel)
In the work Kilo(Cubic)Metre the distance of 1 kilometre is combined with 1 cubic metre.
1000 metres of parachute line has been wound around a one cubic metre volume resulting in the one dimensional
measure of distance becoming a three dimensional volume, freely suspended in the space.
The word metre comes from the Greek metron - ‘a measure’.
Up until the end of the 18th century units of length (foot, alen, inches etc.) were based on the human body and
were measured by measuring devices. These were normally constructed of metal and each country had its own
prototypes that often differed measurably from those of other countries.
In 1790 The French Academy of Sciences presented a proposal to define a basic unit of length based on an
immutable size and chose the distance from the North Pole and the Equator measured along its meridian that
intersects Paris. In the period 1792-97 a measurement of the distance between Dunkerque and Barcelona that
lies on this meridian was taken. Based on knowledge of the geographic width of the two end points, the entire
earth quadrant could be measured and the metre was defined as one-tenth million of this distance. Today, a metre
is measured with the help of laser light, whose wavelength is very precise. One metre is therefor defined as the
distance light travels in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299.792.458 of a second.
Even thought light is now used to define a metre, the measurement is still grounded in the size of the earth and all
units of distance and volume that are in use in Denmark are based on metres.

Where the work Kilo (Cubic) Metre springs from a single metre and accordingly the size of the earth, I + I + I is
centred on the human physique, on my own physique.
The drawings are 60 x 220 cm and are created standing with a parallel ruler. The disposition of the lines is
random, but controlled by the physical process of drawing them. The density of the lines is greatest there where the
working posture is most comfortable.
In 1943 the French architect Le Corbusier created a scale of measurement based on the human body. The Modulor’s
proportions follow the golden ratio. The proportions can be scaled up or down to infinity with the help of the
Fibonacci numbers. Le Corbusier was continuing a 2000 year old quest for a universal mathematical system that
applies both to nature and the man-made environment, an endeavour that had also occupied Pythagoras, Vitruvius
and Leonardo Da Vinci.

The prize winner has been selected by a jury consisting of visual artists Lasse Krog Møller, Lars Worm and Pia Möller-Light (chairperson of KP), and they justify the awarding with following words:

William Niels Møller Nielsen has created a body of works spanning installation, sculpture, and objects—on the floor and on the wall. It is a play with materials and expression, an expression that is playful and consistently distinctive.
At once, it is executed with both precision and imperfect, homemade solutions, which immediately arouse the viewer’s curiosity.
The viewer is compelled to move around. One must listen, get close, and even down on one’s knees to explore the details and discover small whimsical worlds hidden under the stage, under the platform, and on the ground floor of a white, guitar-droning apartment building with handles and on wheels.
It is certainly not without humor.

In the 16-minute-long video Like Shishmaref, Marek Ranis compiles footage from two American island communities, both of which have undergone drastic changes and are threatened by climate change: the human-deserted village of Shishmaref, located on an island in the Bering Strait in northern Alaska, and the overwhelmed resort area of the Outer Banks, consisting of a long chain of islands off the coast of North Carolina.
Although the two island communities are very different and are separated by over 7000 kilometers in entirely different climate zones, their environmental challenges and transformations are strikingly similar.
Marek Ranis demonstrates the uniform, climatic landscape changes by continuously juxtaposing footage from the two locations into a fascinating and visually striking video.
There are no words or spoken commentary, no explanations—only images that speak for themselves. Visual art in its own right.
There are also no moralistic finger-wagging or bombastic proclamations to steer the viewer in a particular direction or to standardize the experience; instead, it offers a poetic, sensual stream of images open to various interpretations and reflections, as is the case with all good art.
The disturbing and destructive circumstances brought about by the dramatic climate changes are thus portrayed in a very understated and discreet manner, making the video a powerful artistic experience.

This is a persuasive work combining direct intent, conviction and clear technical ability. It invites the viewer into the past, with references to both Munch, Hammershøi and Pop art, while also depicting the present through an image of Nour Fog’s remarkable sculptural world. As you look deeper, the reality faced by the artist becomes more and more tangible. Through its lucid and meticulous connections to both past and present, the work expresses a mood that many artists often experience; one of uncertainty and a search for justification. Marc Du has previously exhibited at KP in 2022 and 2023, and if the evolution and distinct approach evidenced here continues, we believe there is much to look forward to.

Charlotte Skak’s video “Æstetisk Redskab 2” (“Aesthetic Instrument 2”) is an example of the power of simplicity when the core substance is well-defined. Little happens in the piece: three elderly women in their underwear dance quietly and silently in a dark, indefinable space.
One could easily interpret the video as a straightforward body-political statement, where the three women represent an alternative physical ideal to the youthful, slim, well-trimmed appearance normally promoted by the media.
But that would merely be a banal political expression of opinion, one which is already familiar and integrated in the social debate.
So that’s not so interesting in itself.

No, the video’s strength lies in the fact that it is gracefully self-contained, and honest and faithful to both its subject and its actors. There’s no unnecessary staging, no distancing irony, just a steadfast belief that the dancing women are participating in their own right: they’re not representing anything other than themselves and their beautiful bodies.
They’re clearly enjoying it, their own presence, no matter what others might think.

Historically, art has always been obsessed with the concept of beauty. Here beauty unfolds with startling power: not least in the close-up shots of stomachs and thighs, where the shapes, colours and movements of the skin are pure, simple, and exquisite, like in a Renaissance painting.
As the title makes clear, an aesthetic instrument.

In his avatar video Dear Rock of the Real World, Jonatan Wejnold depicts a digital universe with an accomplished aesthetic and a strong poetic undertone.
You are led into a digital flower world of great, sensual beauty which is emphasized by music that is both simple and seductive.
But beauty has a downside, an inherent dystopia, where the ecological catastrophe threatens so that it all capsizes and perishes, and where glitch and flaws appear in the picture at intervals.
With its digital tools, the video is a convincing manifestation that points to an uncertain future.

The five minute long video consists of two simple views of a kitchen where a body, lying on the floor, moves in small jerks across the space.
The video is a performative registration and exploration of the space involving elements of sexual stereotypes, such as nudity, vulnerability, high-heeled shoes and a kitchen, and at the same time is completely enigmatic in its difference, which resembles nothing we have seen before. This in itself is a remarkable achievement!
