In the words of Amalie Smith, the Selection Panel at KP21-digital have motivated the choice as follows:

We have chosen Cecilie Penney’s Roll up into a ball as the recipient of this year’s Selection Panel Award. An interactive map of Aarhus provides access to five spaces, where the first person narrator has found themselves under a course of treatment for depression: at the doctor’s, the psychologist, the body psychotherapist, in a yoga room and at home. Each of these five rooms has been 3D scanned, incorperating all the glitches and deficiencies that this technology currently involves, and the architecture of each space therefore hangs down in tatters, as if damaged by fire or leaks. Here, digital technology is actively used to manifest the depressive’s gaps in their sense of the world around them , and not least, in their memory. At the same time, a clear subdued voice ties the notes and fragments from the personal medical journals with the institutional surroundings, where the patient is reduced to the abbrieviation PT . We have selected Roll up into a ball because it is an intense art work that actively addresses both the possibilities and limitations of digital media.

Covid 19 has dominated the agenda over the past year; equally within the cultural sector, sending artists and audiences onto digital platforms to create, present and experience art works. Encountering art online has underscored which works are in their proper element there and those which should be preferably viewed in an exhibition space. KP recognised this as an appropriate moment to examine digital art more closely; its potential and space of possibility.
This year’s KP open call states: ’Digital art offers an essential opportunity to reflect on perhaps the most significant paradigm shift of our time – from the analogue to the digital era – through art’. In light of this, KP will host the first selected open submission exhibition exclusively for digital art in Denmark: KP-Digital, which will be shown alongside KP 20.
With fresh negative Covid tests, the selection panel comprising myself, Jacob Tækker and Amalie Smith met in early February in a deserted Kunsthal Aarhus. Three artists working in digital practices and two members of KP’s board, who guided us through the stack of submissions processed over the space of two days.
KP-Digital received 176 works in all, from 54 submitters. All of these works were created to be presented on digital platforms and were, for the most part, produced using digital media.
Under a new approach, we, the selection panel, had access to the all of the works for three days prior to the meeting. The majority of the submitted works contained a temporal dimension and required a solitary viewing situation of their prospective audience. Therefore, we needed time to see, hear, experience and play the works in their full length beforehand.
At the Kunsthal we reviewed the works one by one, using a system of elimination where selected works continued to the next round – through three rounds in all. Those works that reached the third round constitute the exhibition.
As the jury we have looked at the strength of the artistic idea and the relevance of the content, as well as for an elaborated presentation that balances the sensual and the digital aspects, and whose compositional integrity would reach the audience.
The scope of submissions was broad, stretching from incarnated digital artists, where the approach, method and technology sprang from the digital universe, to artists with other techniques and experiences who had embraced digital formats.
This has resulted in a pronounced diversity in the selected works, which you will also experience in the exhibition.
The exhibition provides an insight into the breadth and potential in art that is presented virtually, and illustrates the importance of taking our contemporary digital lives under consideration – artistically.
We hope that in the future KP will continue to offer a platform for KP-Digital.

Signe Klejs

Born 1974 - lives and works in Aarhus (DK).
Master’s in design with Digital Media from Design School Kolding and Universität der Künste Berlin.

Signe Klejs works across many genres including, stage art, visual arts, site specific art, installations and transmedia projects. Klejs’ art has been exhibited all over Scandinavia, in Europe, Asia and the US. During the European Cultural Capital in Aarhus 2017 Klejs created the piece Hesitation of Light. Since May 2019, her permanent light installation Zeitgeist has been installed on the façade of The Women’s Museum in Aarhus.

Amalie Smith

Amalie Smith

Born 1985 - lives and works in Copenhagen (DK).
Master of Fine Arts degree from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2015 and a BFA from the same school in 2012. In 2009 graduated from The Danish Academy of Creative Writing.

Amalie Smith works with text and image in the shape of exhibitions, video, sound and books, and has published eight books, most recently Thread Ripper (2020). She is broadly interested in how idea and matter are interwoven and this interest has led her to work on diverse subjects such as the Greek sponge divers dance, woven textile as the fabric of the digital, uploading and the colour of ancient sculpture.
Amalie Smiths visual work has been shown in Denmark at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, ARoS, The Museum of Contemporay Art in Roskilde and The National Gallery of Denmark among other places, and abroad in Melbourne, London, Leeds, Reykjavik, Riga and Kunstmuseum Bonn in Germany.

Jacob Tækker

Jacob Tækker

Born 1977 - lives and works in Helsingør (DK).
Graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts 2006 and Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam 2003.

Jacob Tækker works with digital media, installations and performance. Tækker has exhibited both solo and in group exhibitions in the Scandinavian countries as well as in Germany.

The Selection Committee, appointed by KP's board, selects the works for KP21-digital on the basis of the submitted digital files + possibly project descriptions or statements of artistic intentions, if provided by the submitter.
During the evaluation, the Selection Committee gets no further information about the submitter than journal number and, if applicable, the name by reasoned request.
