The Audience Award is awarded on the basis of votes cast by the audience at KP20 and SPRING20 on 21-27 April 2021.
A total of 164 votes were cast, of which 21 went to Marie Kaarøe's works.

Practice
My practice unfolds in a dynamic tension between drawing and sculpture. The works stem from the attempt to combine these two forms of expression and originate in the concepts of scale, measurement and volume. As individuals we move around here on Earth, consciously or unconsciously registering everything around us, on the basis of our own body and physicality. Each one of us is our own roving measuring stick and whether the measurements that surround us are theoretical or real, we nonetheless relate them to the physical space our body creates. In other words, it is the human perception of the world that I am trying to interpret in precise and conceptual works that simultaneously contain complexity and numerous possible meanings.

Kilo(Cubic)Metre (100 x 100 x 100 cm - 1000 meters parashute line, steel)
In the work Kilo(Cubic)Metre the distance of 1 kilometre is combined with 1 cubic metre.
1000 metres of parachute line has been wound around a one cubic metre volume resulting in the one dimensional
measure of distance becoming a three dimensional volume, freely suspended in the space.
The word metre comes from the Greek metron - ‘a measure’.
Up until the end of the 18th century units of length (foot, alen, inches etc.) were based on the human body and
were measured by measuring devices. These were normally constructed of metal and each country had its own
prototypes that often differed measurably from those of other countries.
In 1790 The French Academy of Sciences presented a proposal to define a basic unit of length based on an
immutable size and chose the distance from the North Pole and the Equator measured along its meridian that
intersects Paris. In the period 1792-97 a measurement of the distance between Dunkerque and Barcelona that
lies on this meridian was taken. Based on knowledge of the geographic width of the two end points, the entire
earth quadrant could be measured and the metre was defined as one-tenth million of this distance. Today, a metre
is measured with the help of laser light, whose wavelength is very precise. One metre is therefor defined as the
distance light travels in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299.792.458 of a second.
Even thought light is now used to define a metre, the measurement is still grounded in the size of the earth and all
units of distance and volume that are in use in Denmark are based on metres.

Where the work Kilo (Cubic) Metre springs from a single metre and accordingly the size of the earth, I + I + I is
centred on the human physique, on my own physique.
The drawings are 60 x 220 cm and are created standing with a parallel ruler. The disposition of the lines is
random, but controlled by the physical process of drawing them. The density of the lines is greatest there where the
working posture is most comfortable.
In 1943 the French architect Le Corbusier created a scale of measurement based on the human body. The Modulor’s
proportions follow the golden ratio. The proportions can be scaled up or down to infinity with the help of the
Fibonacci numbers. Le Corbusier was continuing a 2000 year old quest for a universal mathematical system that
applies both to nature and the man-made environment, an endeavour that had also occupied Pythagoras, Vitruvius
and Leonardo Da Vinci.

A professional recognition and a financial boost

Awarding the KP Prize and Audience Award is an initiative coming from KP's Board, and with support by Aarhuus Stiftstidende's Foundation has been made possible a long nurtured desire to upskill talent care in connection with KP.
Winning one of the prizes has meant a professional recognition and financial boost. For as everyone knows, it is the artist who, in principle, bears both expense and risk when creating art works.

KP is delighted to finally be able to declare KP20, SPRING20 and KP21-digital as open.

KP21-digital is an online exhibition, directly accessible via this link: https://kp-digital.kp-spring.dk/en/front-page/

The situation is slightly different with relation to KP20 and SPRING20 in Kunsthal Aarhus, which are still subject to the current Covid-19 restrictions and therefore will first open on Wednesday 21 April.
The exhibition period is 21-29 April. Open every day at 11-19 including Monday 26 April. Corona passes are required to enter Kunsthal Aarhus.

Although both KP20 and SPRING20 are now installed in Kunsthal Aarhus, we have not had sufficient time to document the exhibition in its entirety, unfortunately. However we will continue to publish images/sounds and excerpts from the exhibition, until such time as it is possible to experience it in real life.

For the moment, both catalogues are available here

It is of course regrettable that we are unable to meet up in person in Kunsthal Aarhus today, but we have nonetheless asked KP board member Pernille Lærke Andersen and treasurer for KP Ole C Hansen to provide a brief welcome speech for the occasion; sadly this is as close to a live situation as we can get, at this time.

Art Awards – will be announced today

Saturday 27 March, at 15.00, we will reveal the recipients of three of our art awards on this page.

The KP Prize of DKK 10,000 sponsored by the Aarhuus Stiftstidende’s Foundation. The recipients have been chosen from the exhibitors of KP20, by a jury composed of Lisbeth Bachman, pernille Lærke Andersen, Jens Erik Sørensen and Jesper Rasmussen.
The H+H travel grant of DKK 10,000 sponsored by Hans-E Møller-Hansen and Per Haansbæk, has also been chosen from the exhibitors in KP20.
The Selection Panel’s Award of DKK 10,000 supported by KP-digital. The recipient has been chosen from the exhibitors in KP21-digital, by Amalie Smith, Signe Klejs and Jacob Tækker.

The fourth Art Award, in conjunction with KP, is the Audience Award of DKK 10,000 supported by the Aarhuus Stiftstidende’s Foundation. This will be awarded at the closing of the exhibition period at the end of April. It is awarded on the basis of votes from visitors to the exhibition.

The award winner has been selected by a jury consisting of Lisbeth Bachman, Pernille Lærke Andersen, Jens Erik Sørensen and Jesper Rasmussen, who offer the following brief motivation for their choice:

The five minute long video consists of two simple views of a kitchen where a body, lying on the floor, moves in small jerks across the space.
The video is a performative registration and exploration of the space involving elements of sexual stereotypes, such as nudity, vulnerability, high-heeled shoes and a kitchen, and at the same time is completely enigmatic in its difference, which resembles nothing we have seen before. This in itself is a remarkable achievement!

H+H Travel Grant 2021

The founders of H+H Travel Grant Hans-E Møller-Hansen and Per Haansbæk would have preferred to give a speech at the presentation of the award, if there had been an audience. But the audience was not there. Instead, you get the speech in writing here:

H+H Travel Award
We have been asked why we have instituted this travel award and what our aims are.

Our motivation
For artists, both young and old, there can be a long way from their first works to the polished interiors of galleries and art museums.
But we suspect that there is not quite so far to the Artists’ Easter Exhibition here in Kunsthal Aarhus as there is to ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, for example.
Therefore, this demonstration of encouragement.

What are our intentions?
As we are not overburdened with art historical knowledge, we can only act on the basis of ’like or dislike’.
An approach that also characterises what we hang on our own walls.
With this travel grant we want to promote artistic directions that align with our taste and which at some stage may end up on those walls. Pure egoism, in other words.

We have visited KP, here in Kunsthal Aarhus, over the last couple of years.
And we have agreed that many of the selected works seem to be based on specific ideas rather than displaying well-executed craftsmanship or being decorative. Creativity is not simply a question of ideas, but also of the artist choosing and discarding among them.

Therefore we have decided on a small, but definitive number of stipulations to the work we chose:
They work should be
Well-executed
Original
Decorative
and hopefully, provocative

We are delighted to award this year’s H+H Travel Award of DKK 10,000 to
Christian Daugaard
who we believe meets all our criteria.

H+H Travel Grant was founded in 2020 by Per Haansbæk and Hans-E Møller-Hansen, with the aim of giving talented artists the opportunity to seek inspiration internationally.
The grant was a travel grant of DKK 10,000, and was awarded in 2021 and 2022.
It was the founders themselves who, among the accepted works at this year's KP, selected the prize-winning work based on the following criteria;

H+H Travel Grant was in both 2021 and 2022 awarded at the vernissage.

Practice
Pascal Mayet is an interdisciplinary artist who works serially with drawing, painting, text, installation, performance and sound.
His works are based on the sense of the experienced, and a major part of his practice takes place in the public arena. Through a poetic language he examines the connections between people and and their political, economical, environmental and cultural realities.
It is the interaction between these realities that interests him, where he places equal emphasis on the external space as on our own inner space where we feel, think and remember.
Pascal is interested in how these spaces affect us, but also in how we can affect them.

Kamilla Mez works primarily with themes of digitality, society and space, where she often links particular information from one place to another; addressing some of the many challenging dynamics of the social and political aspects existing at the boundaries of different types of spaces, between public and private or physical versus virtual. She deals with the dominating mediums through a language of elusive, parenthetical meanings that engages itself through the use of modern technology, installation and performance, which in their composition often demand a prior investigation. The investigation of the dynamics of spatial boundaries is important because they play out and affect cultural production and lived experience. Kamilla Mez works with what happens between the digital and arch-material, subtle objects and social profiles, enabling the expansion of an invisible knowledge.

Practice
Olivia Willman’s practice almost always results in sculpture or installations. Whether as a large single sculpture or a small hand-made element, there is always a connection between the material and its interaction with the surrounding world.
Temathically, Willmans works predominately with various forms of mysticism. In her approach to mysticism she maintains an affinity with a substanstial, almost forgotton cultural heritage specifically connected to Scandinavia, as a spirtual juncture between the Middle Ages and our present.

The purpose of SPRING is

to highlight significant artistic expressions and investigations that may otherwise have difficulty finding a public platform
to support the individual artist in his/her career
in a wider perspective, to strengthen the upcoming arts

SPRING has three major focus

Care of talent: Early on in the process, the artists are assigned a qualified supervisor who advises on the individual works. Artists and supervisors collaborate on the overall exhibition and on the form and content of a catalogue.
Exchange: A platform is created for new networks and collaborations artists in between.
Communication: The relationship between works and the audience is developed by publishing catalogues, handouts, launching public talks, etc.

Virus

Virus
- a sound piece by Christine Hvidt and Daniela Maciel

Virus is a continuous sound piece that interprets the encounter between virus and cell. The sonic cycle consist of different stages from the virus collision with the cell; the penetration of the cell membrane; uncoating of the virus in the cell where the genome is released; replication of the genome; assembly of the parts for new vira; and finally the release of the new virus particles from the cell to the rest of the body. In every cycle each stage vary in length as well as expression, resulting in a unique experience for each encounter.

As the only work on the KP20 you will NOT be able to see Virus - but you will be able to hear it.
The drawing is a visualization of a virus's migration through a cell.

About the selection KP20

Artistic criteria only
The Selection Committee select the works solely on the basis of artistic criteria. All other criteria are irrelevant to selection.
The whole Selection Committee evaluate all the submitted works.

Selection Conditions
The works for KP are selected over three rounds based on uploaded digital image files or video or audio files submitted on usb disk.
First round:
All material is evaluated. If there is one committee member that wants to review one or more of the artist's submitted works, then ALL of that artist's works continues to the second round.
Second round:
Individual works can be selected. If there are at least two committee members who want to review one or more of the artist's works, then these specific works continue to the third round.
Third round:
Final and decisive - here the works are selected for KP. There must be at least three committee members (ordinary majority) in favor of a work.

The evaluation is done on the basis of the submitted digital files + possibly project descriptions or statements of artistic intentions, if provided by the submitter.
During the evaluation, the Selection Committee gets no other information about the submitter than journal number and, if applicable, the name by reasoned inquiry.
